'Mad Jack's' in the press . . .

WHEN you're feeling peckish on a Saturday evening and you don't fancy the takeaway, it can be easy to forget some of the hidden gems this area has to offer. But last weekend, when I was questioning where to go, I suddenly remembered such a place, tucked away in rural Hindford on the outskirts of Whittington - the gem in question, The Jack Mytton Inn. Set beside the picturesque Llangollen Canal, the Jack Mytton, or 'Mad Jacks' as it is affectionately known, retains the unique atmosphere of an old country pub, mixing the old with the new in both looks and charm, and with a friendly atmosphere allows visitors and locals to mingle easily. With drinks ordered, myself and my dinner date perused the menu. But there was a problem - too many mouthwatering choices.

Everyone enjoyed the food at the Jack Mytton Inn in Hindford. The specials choices were extensive and interesting. I had the pork wrapped in sausage stuffing served on a sauce of basil. Vegetables were crunchy and fresh. The steak was good as was the ham. It's a popular venue next to the canal and has an outdoor bar in the garden for warmer evenings.

Had a fantastic meal at the Jack Mytton Inn in Hindford, Shropshire - right next to the canal. We all had fantastic good value food everyone was very satisfied. The service was exceptional. We were treated like guests, rather than just as customers... even giving us a ride back to our canal boat at the end of the night as it was quite a long walk back to where we had moored! Amazing service. literally going the extra mile. We couldn't recommend this establishment more highly.

Visited The Jack Mitton for the first time but not the last for a celebration lunch.Warmly met by host ,attentive staff but not intrusive. The Welsh Lamb Henry was to die for. Above average cost but well worth it if you like top quality food beautifully cooked. This is our top choice despite the 40 mile journey each way! Very large capark and situated right on Llangollen canal

We went on a cold January evening and the place was empty. So no atmosphere and very cold!! The manager was very friendly and a great host. The food was lovely, we went for the Lamb and Duck as mains, with homemade puddings to follow. I think going in the summer would be a better option, as there is an outside bar and the facilities for mooring boats, which could create a lovely atmosphere. All in all, I'd visit there again for a pint, and a light lunch as a stop off during a country walk.

The Jack Mytton Inn was a lovely restauraunt in a superb location, staff very friendly and welcoming. My husband had the lamb which he said was really nice but could've done with bit more sauce and slight bit more flavour but he still really enhoyed it, I had the vegatarian sausage + cider hotpot which was fantastic, I would recommend to anyone. All in all we had a realy nice meal and will definately be going back!
Reviews by CD - "The best pub on the canal"
During a short narrow-boat holiday on the Llangollen Canal, during August 2011, we visited several pubs and found the Jack Mytton Inn to be the most welcoming and friendly with the best food and service. On arrival, after mooring nearby on the canal, we were greeted warmly and offered places to sit inside or out and our choice of places and times to eat. The real ale selection was good and the beer well kept and served. The menu provide a wide range of options including those suitable for vegetarians. After ordering our food a medical emergency occurred on one of the adjacent boats, Staff were very helpful with phoning an ambulance and I went to help - the necessitated holding our food order for a while which the staff took in their stride. The food was well prepared and severed. During the meal we started to play "name that tune" with the eclectic selection of background music playing - a quick question to the landlord settled an argument about a particular singer and lead to further discussions and ultimately to a Shove ha'penny board, where we taught the kids of others in the bar how to play. The bar seemed to attract singles, couples and families including an interesting balance of local and tourists, locals and boaters. We left the bar after a very pleasant evening content and ready for a good nights sleep.
"Drinking and dining in a beautiful setting"
We were recommended 'Mad Jacks' by a neighbour so my wife and I took 2 friends for a meal at Jack Mytton's Inn on Friday night. The pub is quite tricky to find unless you check the map carefully beforehand, but it's well worth the trip. The car park is large and welcoming with the direct access to the Llangollen canal and the weeping willows next to the very tempting outside bar area. The giant bear portrays the sense of adventure and history, as do the stories and picture-boards within the bar areas. We found a wide variety of drinks in the bar - all the usual bottles of spirits complemented by some rarer and more interesting ones and some interesting local stouts, real ales and strong ciders. The atmosphere is lovely in Mad Jacks and the staff are very friendly and helpful. They welcome you to have a drink in the bar area or in the comfy lounge area while they ready your table and then call you in to a large atmospheric room with interesting features. On to the food, and I can say we were definitely not dissapointed with the quality or the portion sizes... the mixed grill was enormous as was the bread and butter pudding. We finished our meals and moved onto the coffee's and suddenly realised we'd been nattering that long that we were the last one's there !! That's not like me at all, so it just shows how relaxing and contenting it is in Jack Mytton's Inn. We'll definitely be back soon !!!
"Great atmosphere, food very good, definitely worth a visit..."
Have visited the Jack Mytton several times on our travels up and down the Llangollen canal. Very much a pub atmosphere, and the food makes it well worth a visit, good attention to detail and restaurant quality. Save some room for puddings, I reccommend the bread and butter pudding...
"Good food, Good drinks and excellent company."
We spent a very pleasant evening at The Jack Mytton Inn. The landlord, landlady and staff made us very welcome and kept us entertained. The food was excellent and the chef was very accommodating which is a big plus. There was a large selection of drinks at the bar including four real ales and one real cider all in excellent condition. The company during the evening was varied and interesting with people from around the world. Many people were from narrow boats moored on the canal. This must be one of our top five eating places. We will be back soon Jack.
"A lovely meal with old friends in a magical location"
Old friends had returned from Qatar for a couple of weeks and top of their wish list was to return to The Jolly Jack for one of David's lasagnes. As it was a warm evening we sat outside and chatted to some of the regulars. The landlord, dressed in his Roy Orbison outfit, drifted amongst his guests ensuring that all was running smoothly whilst we were serenaded by music from a bygone era. My friends were not disappointed; the food was excellent and the beers were a perfect accompaniment. We even had a visit from the kitchen maestro himself, enquiring whether we had enjoyed our meal - always a good sign. I can thoroughly recommend this restaurant, however do ensure that you book first to avoid disappointment.
"Very average food and limited wine list"
This place seems to have a very good trade with the boaters on the canal, it is the only pub for miles and has the benefit of being right by the side of the canal. It does get very busy so booking is recomended. They are possibly guilty of trying to offer too wide a choice and so quality suffers a little bit, I had the mussels and it was quite a small portion and served with a small bread roll, I do not enjoy huge meals but this was too little for a main course, my wife had the steak and it was okay but not great. It was however a better portion size and the desserts were okay too. Would I go back ? yes as I believe if we had chosen different meals we may have had a better experince.
"Absolutely fantastic"
Reviewed 13 April 20093people found this review helpful Brilliant meal, exceptional service, well beyond the expected. My lamb rack was absolutely amazing, and everyone in our group of 7 was very impressed by their meals. Great value for money, and lovely atmosphere. Very highly recommended and would definitely dine here again if we were lucky enough to be back in the same lovely area!
